Active Travel and Sustainable Transport Unit

Back in 2019 I brought forward a motion to Fingal requesting that it hire a cycling officer. I am delighted by the news that Fingal County Council has created an Active Travel and Sustainable Transport Unit. The unit’s aim is to develop high quality walking and cycling facilities to encourage more people to switch to active travel. This cross-departmental unit will ensure that Fingal delivers a robust Active Travel and Sustainable programme which will help make walking and cycling safe and tackle climate change.

The Fingal County Council Active Travel Programme 2021-2025 includes the feasibility, design and construction of cycleways in Dublin 15 including:

  • Snugborough Road – NAC to Ongar
  • Clonee to Blanchardstown shopping centre
  • Castleknock to Blanchardstown via Farmleigh
  • Castleknock to Dunsink

Together with the installation of 400+ bike racks per year, a safe routes to school programme and overseeing the completion of the Royal Canal Greenway, Royal Canal-Grand Canal Greenway Link and the Blanchardstown-Phoenix Park cycle route, Active Travel and Sustainable Transport will become a more viable option for many in Dublin West over the next few years.
