“Even Bus Shelters are Beyond this Government’s Building Capabilities” -O’Gorman

New figures provided to Green Party Leader Roderic O’Gorman show a total collapse in the number of bus shelters being built in Dublin.

The information provided to Deputy O’Gorman through a parliamentary question shows that only three bus shelters were built in Dublin in 2025. This compares to a figure of 37 in 2024, 30 in 2023 and 23 post-covid in 2022.

In a January debate on Bus Services, Deputy O’Gorman highlighted the urgent need for greater transit infrastructure in Dublin West, noting that areas like Tyrrelstown, Hollywoodrath, and Kilmartin Grove are being left behind by a public transport system that cannot keep up with the area’s rapid growth.

Addressing the 2025 figures, Deputy O’Gorman said:

“Bus shelters are the bare minimum that should be provided to commuters. But this Government can’t even manage that. In 2025, without the Green Party in government, only 3 new bus shelters were built across the entirety of Dublin City. That’s down from 37 the previous year. And this from the Government that promises 50,000 houses per year!”.

“There is a commitment in the Programme for Government to ensure that transport operators provide proper infrastructure for passengers, but just like other promises made by this government on public transport, it has fallen by the wayside.”

The number of bus shelters built in Dublin since 2018, according information provided to Deputy Roderic O’Gorman from the National Transport Authority on foot of a parliamentary question:
