Census 2011 Figures In

The Preliminary Census 2011 figures show substantial growth in Dublin West.

The population of the constituency has increased to 117,126. We now have 29,282 persons per TD, just short of the constitutionally permitted maximum of 30,000.  The Blakestown electoral district has had the 4th largest population increase in the country, while the Ward electoral district was 9th (see here, pages 4-5).

Lots of other juicy nuggets of information for stats nerds!

Dublin West Greens hold successful Canal Clean-Up

Dublin West Green Party Canal Clean-Up June 2011

Dublin West Green Party Canal Clean-Up June 2011

The Dublin West Green Party held our 3rd annual Royal Canal Clean-Up on Saturday. 25 volunteers helped us to picked up cans, bottles, paper and general rubbish from in and around the canal bank, covering the stretch between the 12th Lock pub and Coolmine train station.

By the end of the afternoon, we had about 20 bags of rubbish collected and divided between recyclables and non-recyclables. We also ended up with three bicycle wheels.

The Royal Canal is a huge resource for Dublin 15 in terms of boating, fishing, walking and cycling. It’s something we need to protect, which is why the Dublin West Greens organise a clean up each year. I want to thank all the volunteers who joined us and Fingal County Council who picked up the rubbish from us when we were finished.

Brian Lenihan’s passing a loss to Ireland and a loss to west Dublin – O’Gorman

Green Party Dublin West representative, Roderic O’Gorman has paid tribute to Brian Lenihan TD.

“I’m deeply saddened to learn of the death of Brian Lenihan. His passing is a loss to Ireland and a loss to west Dublin. I want to offer my sincere sympathies to his wife, children and family”.

“Over the years I got to know Brian through attending public meetings and encountering him on the campaign trail in Dublin West. He was always unfailingly courteous and engaging. While he could disagree with you very strongly in the course of a debate, he was always able to separate the politics from the individual, and never engaged in personal attacks”.

“While Brian was Minister for Justice, I worked with him on behalf of the Green Party in the drafting of the Civil Partnership Bill. Throughout, he was very clear that a modern country needed to provide same-sex couples with the ability to recognise their relationships. During his time as Minister, it was obvious that this piece of legislation was a priority for him and it now forms part of his legacy”.

“Like everyone else in the country, I was deeply impressed with the courage he displayed in battling his illness. Even during the depths of the economic crisis, he devoted himself to his role as Minister for Finance, when others would have retreated from public life”.
